Generative AI in National Defence: Securing Canada's Future through Cyber Collaboration
L'Intelligence Artificielle Générative dans la défense nationale: assurer l'avenir du Canada grâce à la Cybercollaboration
SEENE workshops are a series of yearly scientific events organized by ImaginLab research center at École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal, Canada. It stands for: Security and Energy Efficiency in smart Numerical Environments This workshop focuses on exploring the implications and opportunities along with the effects of AI and generative AI on National Defence. It will bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) and several leading defense and security firms. It fosters collaboration between the DND/CAF and cybersecurity experts from academia and industry to share expertise on current threats, promote partnership, framing potential collaborations and envision specific training programs at different educational levels. The main research themes for this workshop are:
Dr. Nadjia Kara is a Professor at ÉTS Montreal and leads research in cloud computing, network security, and artificial intelligence. Her work focuses on developing secure and intelligent systems for next-generation networks. She has extensive experience in organizing international workshops and conferences in the field of cybersecurity.
Dr. Abder-Rezak Benaskeur is a research scientist at DRDC. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Université Laval, focusing on areas such as applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, algorithms, robotics, control theory, systems modeling, and mobile robotics. Dr. Benaskeur has published extensively—over 50 works—including studies on sensor management, probabilistic plan recognition, multi-agent resource allocation, and threat evaluation in military command and control systems.
M. Toufik Ouaguenouni serves as Account Director, Cybersecurity at PROMPT, a Québec-based innovation and funding agency specializing in ICT, AI, cybersecurity, and related technologies. In his role, Toufik supports the development of cybersecurity projects by bridging businesses and research, helping companies secure funding and certifications, and advocating for strategic investments in protective technologies. He has also represented PROMPT at international events such as the European Cyber Week, demonstrating his role in fostering global collaboration in cybersecurity.
Dr. Laaziz Lahlou is a Professor at ÉTS Montreal specializing in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. His research interests include machine learning applications in security, network defense systems, and AI-driven threat detection. He collaborates with industry partners to develop innovative security solutions.
Anes Abdennebi is a Ph.D. researcher specialized in applied ML/DL/AI and GenAI models for cybersecurity applications at the host and network levels. With backgrounds in high performance computing, machine learning, cryptography, and GenAI models training, a Master's degree in Computer Engineering from Izmir Institute of Technology, a Master's degree in Computer Science & Engineering from Sabancı University he has a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of employing AI in cybersecurity defensive systems.
